What is AI search optimization?

AI search optimization is the set of changes that help an AI assistant read your site, understand what business you are and quote you when someone asks a question you can answer. It also goes by generative engine optimization, answer engine optimization or LLM optimization: the names differ, the work is the same.

An assistant does not show ten links: it reads a few pages and writes an answer. To be part of it, a site has to be readable without running code, has to state plainly who you are, where you work and what you offer, and has to contain sentences that can be quoted as they are.

What do our AI SEO services include?

Our AI SEO services cover three things: making the site readable for AI crawlers, describing the business with complete structured data, and rewriting the content so it answers questions before it explains them.

  • Content visible without JavaScript: pages arrive already written in the HTML, because many AI crawlers do not run scripts.
  • A robots.txt that opens the site to the AI crawlers you want (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google Extended and the others), by choice rather than by a theme default.
  • An llms.txt file, the index meant for assistants, and markdown versions of the main pages.
  • Complete schema.org structured data: LocalBusiness with name, address, phone and opening hours, Organization, services, FAQ and breadcrumbs.
  • A consistent entity: the same name, address and contacts on the site, the Google Business Profile and external profiles, linked to each other.
  • Content written to answer: the answer in the first lines of every section, headings phrased as questions, figures and dates that can be checked.
  • The result measured with our audit and Search Console, before and after the work.

How is AI search optimization different from SEO?

Generative engine optimization does not replace SEO: it extends it. The foundations are the same (fast pages, clear titles, sitemap, canonicals), and a site Google does not index rarely ends up in an assistant's answer. What changes is the goal: not only appearing among the results, but being the source the assistant quotes.

How do you measure AI visibility?

We measure it with an AI score out of 100, built on ten weighted checks: content without JavaScript, llms.txt, robots.txt open to AI crawlers, structured data, sitemap, title, meta description, canonical, HTTPS and Lighthouse's SEO score. The method is public: every check and its weight are on the page how the AI score is calculated.

It is the same score we measure Italian cities with in our observatory: in Verona, across 4,640 working sites, the average is 69.8 out of 100, only 26.6% have an llms.txt file and just 4.1% of businesses describe themselves in full in their structured data. No, and nobody can honestly do so: what an assistant answers depends on the question, the model and the sources it picks at that moment. What we can guarantee is the work that makes the site readable, clear and quotable, measured with a public score before and after.
It is a text file at the root of the site that lists the main pages with a line of description each, meant to be read by AI assistants. The format is recent and not every assistant reads it yet, but it costs little and removes ambiguity: that is why it weighs 15 points out of 100 in our score.
It depends on what you sell. If your content is the product, like a newspaper or a course, blocking them can make sense. For a business that wants customers, the opposite is almost always true: a site closed to AI crawlers cannot be quoted in answers. We tell you case by case and set the robots.txt accordingly.
