Why do so many Verona websites fail to open?
Not because they are missing: three businesses in four list a website. The trouble is what happens afterwards, when nobody renews the domain, pays for the hosting or redirects the old pages.

Of 9,877 businesses, 7,377 (74.7%) list a website and 4,948 (50.1%) have a working one.
The gap is made of businesses that had a website, or believe they still do: the link is on the map, but it leads to an error. For the person searching it is as if there were none, and the next result is a competitor.

Almost one link in two leads to a domain that does not answer
Of the 2,429 links that do not open, 1,074 (44.2%) point to a domain or server that does not answer, 570 (23.5%) to a site behind bot protection, 411 (16.9%) to an error page and 268 (11%) to a social profile or a platform page.
An expired domain and a 404 left behind by an old rebuild are the two most common cases, and the easiest to avoid: a website somebody looks after does not switch itself off. Among the profiles listed instead of a website, Instagram comes first, with 101 businesses. Sites behind bot protection most likely open in a browser: we count them apart.
