Verona business websites: what we found in 5,000 sites
What do the websites of Verona's businesses look like? We scanned almost 5,000 websites within the city limits, covering restaurants, hotels, professional firms, shops and garages. Here are five things we found, from the full Verona report.
1. The server answers in 94 ms, but on mobile the content takes over 7 seconds
The server responds in 94 ms (median), but on mobile the main content appears after more than 7 seconds. The bottleneck is not the hosting: it is JavaScript (688 kB median) and images. One site in ten takes 20 seconds or more.
2. Restaurants and hotels are the least readable by AI and legacy crawlers
In such a touristic city, these are exactly the two sectors with the lowest readability score for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini: 66 out of 100, versus 75 for professional firms and fashion. The score is our AI Crawlability Score.
3. Only 4.1% fully communicate their data to Google
57% of sites have some structured data, but only 4.1% have the essential data complete. The "LocalBusiness" block is present on 15% of sites, and among those that have it, 44% are missing opening hours. That is the first thing a customer looks for.
4. 23.5% of images are in modern formats
Only 23.5% of images are in WebP or AVIF. 37% are JPG and 22% are PNG.
5. Almost one site in ten does not use HTTPS
9.9% of sites do not use HTTPS. The browser flags them as "not secure" before the customer even sees the page: an image problem that is easy to avoid.
A note on method
The businesses come from Overture Maps, an open dataset that does not match the business register. We only measure the home page of sites that respond and do not have anti-bot protection. The full approach is in our method page.
To date we have scanned over 50,000 websites, more than 100,000 pages and more than 1 million media files. The data is free to use under CC BY 4.0, citing the link to the report.
